What is rug binding?

Carpet binding, usually the least expensive and easiest way to finish a rug's edge, refers to wrapping a strip of fabric around the carpet's edges and stitching it in place with a high-powered sewing machine. You can create custom area rugs or repair a frayed edge of a rug you can't bear to part with.

There's a lot of different colored tapes, so it's easy to find something that matches. However, many designers feel it's to let it thoroughly blend with the rug, rather than using it for contrast; the tape is thin so that the outcome could look odd.

Why is it sometimes called area rug binding?

We often hear of large amounts of leftover pieces when carpeting, especially wall-to-wall, is installed. Waste not!
